Problem Behavior and Heart Rate Reactivity in Adopted Adolescents: Longitudinal and Concurrent Relations
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present longitudinal study examined resting heart rate and heart rate variability and reactivity to a stressful gambling task in adopted adolescents with aggressive, delinquent, or internalizing behavior problems and adopted adolescents without behavior problems (total N5 151). Early-onset delinquent adolescents showed heart rate hyporeactivity to the stress-eliciting gambling task compared to late-onset delinquent adolescents and adolescents without behavior problems. Heart rate, heart rate variability, and reactivity to stress were not related to environmental factors such as earlychildhood parental sensitivity, parental socioeconomic status, or adoptee’s health status at arrival. We conclude that the distinction between delinquency and aggression and between childhood-onset and adolescenceonset delinquency is important for the study of stress reactivity in adolescents.

Concurrent attenuated reactivity of alpha-amylase and cortisol is related to disruptive behavior in male adolescents.
Attenuated reactivity of salivary alpha-amylase has been proposed as a specific sympathetic marker of disruptive behavior in juveniles and may have additional value to studying other autonomic parameters and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity. Investigating the interrelationships between neurobiological parameters in relation to juvenile disruptive behavior may enhance insight into th...
متن کاملThe predictive value of low heart rate and heart rate variability during stress for reoffending in delinquent male adolescents.
Low autonomic (re)activity is a consistent correlate of antisocial behavior in juveniles. However, longitudinal research relating autonomic measures to persistent antisocial behavior has remained scarce. Therefore, in the present study we examined the predictive value of heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV, often studied as respiratory sinus arrhythmia) for reoffending in delinquent...
متن کاملEffects of family cohesion and heart rate reactivity on aggressive/rule-breaking behavior and prosocial behavior in adolescence: the Tracking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey study.
The biological sensitivity to context hypothesis posits that high physiological reactivity (i.e., increases in arousal from baseline) constitutes heightened sensitivity to environmental influences, for better or worse. To test this hypothesis, we examined the interactive effects of family cohesion and heart rate reactivity to a public speaking task on aggressive/rule-breaking and prosocial beha...

Background: In this study the longitudinal relationships between proactive / reactive aggression and autonomic nervous system (ANS) (re)activity were studied, as well as the moderating effect of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Methods: Delinquent males were assessed twice over a 5-year period in adolescence. We related self-reported proactive/ reactive aggression and PTSD symptom...
متن کاملDysregulated negative emotional reactivity as a predictor of chronic peer victimization in childhood.
This study examined the relations of dysregulated negative emotional reactivity, emotional distress, and chronic peer victimization in childhood. A model was proposed whereby dysregulated reactivity was directly and indirectly related to concurrent peer victimization through victimization-related emotional distress. The model further proposed that dysregulated reactivity directly incrementally ...
